Legend Muzaffar Ali’s unfinished cinematic epic, “Zooni” remai one of Indian cinema’s most beautiful and enduring mysteries, spoken about with quiet affection by film historians and cinephiles alike.
Shot through the late 1980s, the ambitious project was based on the tragic and poetic life of Habba Khatoon, the legendary 16th-century Kashmiri poet-queen. The film brought together an extraordinary ensemble of creative geniuses, starring Vinod Khanna and Dimple Kapadia in the lead roles, with a soul-stirring musical score by Khayyam and evocative lyrics by celebrated poet Shahryar.
Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Kashmir Valley, the production captured the region’s raw beauty and rich cultural heritage. However, political unrest in the valley during the late ’80s forced an abrupt halt to the filming. Despite substantial portions being completed, the reels were shelved, and the movie never reached commercial theatres.
Decades after its inception, Zooni continues to hold a mythical status in cinema lore. The unreleased film stands as a testament to artistic ambition, proving that an unfinished masterpiece can sometimes leave a longer, more profound echo than many completed films ever do.
