Veteran filmmaker Sanjay Gupta has shed light on a turbulent chapter in the history of Bollywood highlighting superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s uncompromising defiance against extortion and intimidation by the Mumbai underworld during the 1990s.
Amidst recent appearance discussing the era when criminal syndicates regularly targeted the film industry, Gupta recalled how Khan stood his ground despite grave personal risks. According to the filmmaker, the actor rejected demands to star in specific films or perform at private stage shows.
The 1990s marked a high-tension period when prominent figures in Hindi cinema frequently faced coercive demands from criminal elements. Khan had previously acknowledged these harrowing experiences in archival interviews, admitting that the constant danger forced him to live under heavy police protection and armed security detail for three continuous years.
