In a major cinematic collaboration, National Award-winning actor Manoj Bajpayee is set to step into the role of Mahatma Gandhi for the first time in his career. The upcoming historical feature will be helmed by acclaimed director Sudhir Mishra and produced by filmmaker Anubhav Sinha alongside Narendra Hirawat under the Benaras Mediaworks banner, presented by NH Studioz.
The makers unveiled the first look of the film on Sunday, generating significant buzz across the industry. Production is already underway, with the cast and crew currently filming on location in Lucknow.Breaking away from traditional biopics, Sudhir Mishra’s directorial focuses heavily on a critical, lesser-known 21-day chapter in Indian history. Set against the turbulent backdrop of August 1947, the narrative explores Gandhi’s profound decision to distance himself from the political center of power in Delhi during the dawn of India’s independence.
Known for his intense dedication to character realism, Bajpayee has reportedly undergone a strict diet and lifestyle regimen to physically transform for the role. The film boasts a powerhouse ensemble cast, featuring veteran actor Saurabh Shukla and Divya Dutta in pivotal roles. While the project is currently being developed under the tentative working title Gandhi and My Mother, an official final title is expected to be announced closer to the wrap of the schedule.
