BJP MP and actress Kangana Ranaut has launched a scathing attack on veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah, escalating a public debate over student protests, celebrity activism and patriotism. The controversy followed Shah’s criticism of prominent Bollywood personalities who, in his view, had remained silent over student protests.
Kangana responded by sharing actor Piyush Mishra’s criticism of Shah and wrote that everyone is loyal to someone, but she takes pride in protecting and fighting for the country from which she earns her livelihood. She then directly targeted Shah, alleging that while he “eats the bread of this country,” he “fights for the neighbouring country.” Kangana went even further by saying that in today’s world being compared to a dog could be considered a compliment because loyalty is rare, adding that she would rather be a dog than a “lomdi” or fox like Naseeruddin Shah. Her comments triggered another heated political and cultural debate, with supporters praising her outspoken nationalism while critics questioned the fairness of equating political disagreement or criticism with disloyalty to the country. It is important to distinguish Kangana’s rhetoric from established fact: her suggestion that Shah supports or “fights for” Pakistan is her accusation and political interpretation, not a proven finding about him. In a democracy, celebrities and citizens alike have the right to express political opinions, support protests or criticise governments, while others are equally free to challenge those views. Patriotism can be expressed in different ways, and disagreement should ultimately be answered through evidence and debate rather than assumptions about someone’s loyalty.
The Kangana–Naseeruddin exchange shows once again how questions of nationalism, protest and celebrity responsibility can quickly become intensely political in India.
