Delhi HC closes PIL over “Mirzapur” song

The Delhi High Court has officially closed a public interest litigation petition that challenged the use of the popular song Shoorveer in the web series “Mirzapur”.
The division bench designated to hear the matter disposed of the plea after observing that the core grievances highlighted by the petitioner were already the subject matter of active, independent copyright litigation between the concerned parties.

The petitioner had approached the court seeking interventions against the inclusion of the track in the series, alleging unauthorized usage and arguing that it impacted public sentiments. However, the bench noted that a public interest litigation is not the appropriate legal vehicle for resolving intricate intellectual property rights and commercial disputes.

Finding that the active civil suits already covering the copyright claims were the correct forum for adjudication, the high court determined that further proceedings in the public interest litigation were unnecessary.

The closure of this petition leaves the underlying contractual and copyright arguments to be fully resolved within the ongoing commercial lawsuits.
