Senior Congress leader and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan stated on Tuesday that party president Mallikarjun Kharge made a “mistake” with his recent controversial remarks concerning Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Speaking to reporters in Godhra, Prithviraj Chavan emphasized that civil language and political decorum should never be compromised by leaders from any political party. He noted that Mallikarjun Kharge’s comments were uncalled for and suggested that an explanation should be provided if the remark was made inadvertently.
The controversy followed Mallikarjun Kharge’s address at an event in Patna on Sunday marking the 139th birth anniversary of Bihar’s first Chief Minister, Shrikrishna Singh, where he retorted “Modi ka baap bhi jayega” during an exchange with an audience member.
While criticizing the remarks, Prithviraj Chavan also remarked that political hostility is a two-way issue, pointing out that senior BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, have earlier used critical or objectionable language against Congress leaders such as Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. He recalled past parliamentary traditions where leaders maintained personal cordiality despite fierce ideological debates.
