Kamal Haasan gifts woman bus driver who quit job amid travel ticket row to DMK MP
In a rare gesture actor politician Kamal Haasan on Monday gifted a car to Coimbatore based first woman bus driver Sharmila who quit her job over a controversy surrounding issuing a travel ticket to DMK MP Kanimozhi.
According statement by Makkal Needhi Maiam Chief, the car was gifted to Sharmila, , on behalf of the “Kamal Panbattu Maiam” (Kamal Cultural Center) to facilitate her to transform as driver-entrepreneur.
Kamal Haasan pointed out he was anguished over the recent debate surrounding Sharmila, who set an example to women of her age as a bus driver. She should not remain a mere driver. It is Kamal’s belief to create many Sharmilas.
According to Sharmila, Last week, barely minutes after Kanimozhi took a ride from Gandhipuram to Peelamedu in Coimbatore in the bus driven by her, when the DMK Parliamentarian allegedly showed dis-respect to her colleague, and also because her management accused her of seeking publicity by inviting prominent personalities to travel in the bus, she decided to give up her “dream job”.
Sharmila claimed she had intimated her management on the proposed visit of the MP but she could not digest the “disrespect” meted out to the DMK leader.
The transport firm denied being informed on Kanimozhi’s visit and insisted Sharmila had left on her own accord.
