Opposition demands All-Party meet over Parliament Prorogation delay

Congress President and Opposition Leader in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge has addressed a formal letter to
Prime Minister Modi, strongly criticizing an unprecedented 64-day delay in proroguing the Monsoon Session of Parliament. The session was adjourned sine die on August 13, 2026, but both Houses have yet to be officially prorogued by the President of India.

In his missive, Kharge characterized the prolonged suspension as highly unusual and expressed deep concern over the lack of transparency surrounding the status of the session. He noted that keeping the Houses un-prorogued for more than two months has sparked widespread political speculation regarding potential sudden reconvenings or extensions that bypass regular notice periods for lawmakers.

The Congress chief also utilized the communication to make a fourth appeal for the immediate convention of an all-party meeting to discuss the government’s fresh proposals on the delimitation exercise before they are finalized or introduced in Parliament. Kharge cautioned the administration against attempting to push through far-reaching Constitutional Amendment Bills without extensive consultation and consensus among all political parties and stakeholders.
