Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament and actor-filmmaker Kamal Haasan issued a strong statement asserting that India’s economic and policy decisions belong strictly to its people, rejecting external pressure in the ongoing debate over satellite internet and market regulations.
Reacting to comments from US billionaire and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk regarding delayed regulatory approvals for Starlink in India, Haasan emphasized that national sovereignty cannot be dictated by corporate interests.
“India is a democracy, not a colony,” Haasan stated. “We welcome the world, but we, the Indian people, will decide our own future – not Western vested interests, their double standards or any billionaire – Indian or American”. Kamal noted that strategic infrastructure such as telecommunications spectrum and national security safeguards are non-negotiable elements of state policy. He underscored that foreign investments must operate within local laws, frameworks, and institutional rules rather than attempting to bypass domestic oversight.
