Some songs go beyond the media landscape and emerges as an integral part of our lives forever. One such song, with its infectious, desi-swag-filled tune, has been a favourite for decades, compelling people to dance sans hesitation. Bewildering, this famous song was initially rejected by Dev Anand.

Originally the song was intended for Dev Anand’s film “Banarsi Babu” but was dismissed as “too trivial.” Zeenat Aman narrated this anecdote

Subsequently, the song found its place in Amitabh Bachchan’s 1978 film ‘Don.’ The song in question is “Khaike Paan Banaraswala.” Its lively lyrics and energetic rhythm have elevated it to classic status.

When ‘Don’ director Chandra Barot heard the tune, he immediately recognised its potential, deeming it perfect for his intense thriller.
It was Manoj Kumar’s suggestion to Chandra Barot, director of “Don” who enlisted music composers Kalyanji-Anandji to compose a track for the film, which led to the incorporation of their tune.

The song, featuring Amitabh Bachchan and Zeenat Aman, was picturised at Mehboob Studios. Kishore Kumar lent his playful and mischievous voice to the track, perfectly complementing Amitabh Bachchan’s comic energy.

Amitabh Bachchan’s performance in the song left everyone in awe. According to media reports, he chewed 15-16 paan during the shoot to achieve the desired stained-lips effect.

When ‘Don’ was released, “Khaike Paan Banaraswala” became its standout feature. Audiences thoroughly enjoyed its quirky dance moves and engaging lyrics. ‘Don,’ starring Amitabh Bachchan and Zeenat Aman, emerged as one of the biggest hits of the 1970s.
