Cult classic film “Bemisal” clocks 44 Years of its release
Bemisal was known for its emotional depth and a rare double role for Amitabh Bachchan in a Hrishikesh Mukherjee film
Hrishikesh Mukherjee directorial Bemisal released in 1982
is widely recognized as a classic, emotionally charged drama featuring a rare double role for Amitabh Bachchan in a “middle cinema” film.
He played the roles of
Dr. Sudhir Roy and his brother, Adhir Roy.
The film is a nuanced, emotional story focusing on sacrifice, gratitude, and moral dilemmas, rather than the typical action-heavy roles Bachchan was known for at the time.
It was the last film the acclaimed director Hrishikesh Mukherjee made with Amitabh Bachchan who plays a noble individual out of loyalty, sacrifices his love (played by Raakhee) and takes the blame for a crime committed by his foster brother (played by Vinod Mehra).
Regardless not being a massive commercial hit compared to his other 1982 films, it is regarded as a “gem” with one of Bachchan’s most underrated and best performances.
Notedly, the film is a remake of the 1975 Bengali film “Ami Shey O Shakha”, featuring Uttam Kumar. The film is also noted for R.D. Burman’s music and for being shot in the Kashmir valley.
Notably, the film was nominated for Filmfare Awards, including Best Actor (Amitabh Bachchan).
Even after 44 years, Bemisal continues to touch hearts with its powerful performances, soul-stirring emotions, and timeless storytelling. Truly, a masterpiece that remains unparalleled!
