After the defeat of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, Alapan Bandyopadhyay, resigned from his position as chief advisor to the outgoing Chief Minister.

Alapan Bandyopadhyay is a 1987-batch IAS officer who, in 2021, was at the center of a major clash between Mamata Banerjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his deputation to the central government.
On May 6, 2026, after the BJP’s victory in the 2026 West Bengal elections, Bandyopadhyay and another advisor, H.K. Dwivedi, resigned from their roles as chief advisors to Mamata Banerjee.
Along with Bandyopadhyay, several other high-profile advisors appointed by Banerjee, including Manoj Pant and economist Abhirup Sarkar, also resigned, stating they had no moral right to continue after the government’s defeat.

Notwithstanding the defeat and the resignation of her aides, Mamata Banerjee refused to resign from her post initially, alleging electoral manipulation. The 2026 election results brought about significant administrative changes, including the resignation of top aides who were central to the previous administration’s controversies with the Centre.
