Long before the term “power couple” or scripted reality, Priya Tendulkar and Karan Razdan scripted Doordarshan history with the iconic mid-1980s show
“Rajani”. Scripted by Razdan, who also played her subdued on-screen husband, and anchored by Tendulkar’s fierce, household-name activist persona, the show turned domestic grievances against civic apathy into prime-time moral theatre.
Their dynamic professional partnership quickly blossomed into a real-life romance, and the duo married in 1988.
Tendulkar’s fearless portrayal of
“Rajani”, resonated so deeply that audiences actually began approaching her in the streets to help solve their civic issues.
Razdan not only crafted the hard-hitting scripts but actively supported Tendulkar’s rise to national stardom.
Notwithstanding their massive success and undeniable on-screen chemistry, the marriage fractured, leading to their separation in 1995.
Tendulkar’s legacy as a trailblazing actress and host, alongside Karan Razdan’s versatile contributions as an actor, writer, and director, laid the foundation for socially conscious television in India.
