Some bonds defy labels. The relationship between Gulzar and Meena Kumari was forged in deep emotional intensity and poetic synchronicity. In a world of fleeting connections, they found a profound emotional sanctuary in each other—a kinship that turned sorrow into art and outlasted death itself.
Though terminally ill with liver cirrhosis, Kumari completed Mere Apne (out of sheer affection and respect for him on his directorial debut.
Both found refuge in Urdu Shayari, often reciting couplets and ghazals to one another.Marital Distress: Gulzar’s literary understanding provided Kumari great comfort amidst her strained relationship with husband Kamal Amrohi.
Even when bedridden amidsythe final stages of her illness, she put all her faith in Gulzar’s vision and bravely completed the shooting. On set, notwithstanding her declining health, she maintained a warm and humorous relationship with younger co-stars like Vinod Khanna and Shatrughan Sinha.
Gulzar had originally intended to shoot a full song sequence (“Roz Akeli Aaye…”) on her, but her failing health made it impossible.
Before her passing, Meena Kumari entrusted Gulzar with her most prized possession – her private diaries containing her complete collection of poems.
He faithfully published her poetry after her demise, preserving her legacy as both a legendary actress and a gifted poet.
