Biswajeet and Rajshree’s chemistry in Shehnai (1964) is defined by a captivating, effortless innocence. Their pairing belongs to a gentler era of Hindi cinema, lingering in the memory not because of grand dramatics, but due to their tender, breezy romance.
This S.D. Narang-directed musical romance captures an era where onscreen love felt unforced.
Biswajeet plays Deepak, an ambitious Air Force pilot, and Rajshree plays Preeti. Their romance faces conflict when Preeti’s mother (played by Veena who lost her own husband in the Air Force strongly opposes the marriage due to the dangers of the profession.
The film is celebrated for its soundtrack, particularly the Mohd. Rafi classic “Na Zjatko Zulf Se Paani” and the romantic duet
“Sadiyon Purani Apni Kahani” set in Kashmir.
Although usually overshadowed by other blockbusters from the era, the quiet charm and sweet dynamic of the lead pair remain hard to shake.
