Vijaya Mehta theatre director and actress passes away

Veteran theatre director, actor, and filmmaker Vijaya Mehta passed away at her Mumbai residence on June 30, 2026, at the age of 91. Affectionately known as “Bai,” the Padma Shri awardee was a pioneering force in experimental Marathi theatre who co-founded the iconic Rangayan theatre group.

Acknowledged for her visionary work across stage and screen,
her passing marks the end of a legendary era in the Indian performing arts.
She helmed critically acclaimed, award-winning Hindi films like Rao Sahib released in 1986) and
“Pestonjee”released in 1988 and was a celebrated actor in parallel cinema landmarks such as
“Party” released in 1984 and”Kalyug”released in 1981.
She mentored generations of acting legends and theatre practitioners, including prominent names like Anupam Kher and Nana Patekar.
Beyond her extensive work on stage, she notably served as the executive director of the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) in Mumbai.
Her artistic contributions were recognized with highly prestigious honors, including the Padma Shri and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award.
