Amar Prem clocks 54 yearsremains a landmark film in Hindi cinema

Shakti Samanta directorial 1972 released film “Amar Prem” 1972, is a critically acclaimed landmark film acknowledged for its profound exploration of love, loneliness, and societal hypocrisy, elevating the careers of its stars Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore. It is celebrated for its poetic storytelling, iconic RD Burman music, and evocative portrayal of 1970s Calcutta now (Kolkata).

Sharmila Tagore has given a career-defining performance as Pushpa, while Rajesh Khanna brought nuanced charm to the character of Anand Babu, delivering the iconic dialogue, “Pushpa, I hate tears”.
Music composed by R.D. Burman with lyrics by Anand Bakshi, the soundtrack is considered one of the best in Hindi cinema history, featuring hits like “Chingari Koi Bhadke,” “Kuch Toh Log Kahenge,” and “Raina Beeti Jaaye”
Produced by Shakti Films, the film was a remake of the Bengali film “Nishi Padma”. Due to restrictions, the iconic scenes of the Hooghly River were filmed in a tank at Natraj Studio in Mumbai.

The movie challenged conventions by focusing on a platonic, deep bond between two lost souls rather than a standard romantic formula, cementing its status as a cult classic.

The music by RD Burman considered to be part of his greatest work of his career featured six songs that remain favourites and form an integral part of the legacies of RD Burman, Anand Bakshi and singers’ Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar.

For the film that gave the superstar his trademark line, “Pushpa, I hate tears”, Rajesh Khanna nearly didn’t feature in Amar Prem as Samanta felt that his busy schedule might not allow him to have dates. In the end, Rajesh Khanna juggled his dates around and worked nights after wrapping up his other commitments and became a part of the movie.
