Tharoor’s comments contrasted with the party’s official line, triggering a sharp response from other Congress leaders like Pawan Khera.
Defusing the internal rift, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh officially noted that varying opinions are welcomed in a democratic organization, telling the Press Trust of India that different points of view being aired are viewed as a “strength of the Congress Party.”
The BJP immediately utilized the disagreement to target the Congress, claiming Tharoor’s stance exposed leadership gaps within the opposition.
