Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis led the state in mourning the demise of veteran theatre and film icon Vijaya Mehta. He described her passing as the “end of an era in Marathi theatre”, noting that her influence as an actor, director, and producer has inspired generations of artists.
Devendra Fadnavis noted that her work left an indelible mark on Indian performing arts and stated, “With her passing, a face that represented an entire generation has gone behind the curtain of time”.
Prime Minister Modi remembered the theatre icon as one of the towering personalities of culture and cinema.
Affectionately known as ‘Bai’, she co-founded the iconic Rangayan theatre group alongside Vijay Tendulkar and Shreeram Lagoo.
She directed landmark plays such as “Barrister” and “Hamidabaichi Kothi” and directed acclaimed films like “Rao Saheb” “Pestonjee”.
