Intensifying El Niño threatens final phase of India’s Monsoon

A strengthening El Niño event poses a severe risk to India’s ongoing southwest monsoon season, with the India Meteorological Department warning of below-normal rainfall in August and September.

According to the India Meteorological Department, “moderate El Niño conditions currently prevail over the equatorial Pacific Ocean, with sea surface temperature anomalies remaining above normal.”“Forecasts indicate a continued strengthening of El Niño conditions throughout the remaining period of Southwest Monsoon season as per media reports. It’s learned the UN chief warned that the planet is on fire while highlighting risks of increased drought and reduced rainfall around the Indian Ocean basin.
