In a fresh turn of events kicking
off September 1, 2026, the Tamil Nadu government led by Chief Minister Vijay enforced a ban on smartphones with cameras inside 52 major temples to preserve religious sanctity and stop unauthorized photography.
Applied across 52 major 52 major shrines administered by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department, applying equally to regular visitors and VIPs.
Devotees must leave their camera-equipped phones at designated entry counters and lockers for a fee of Rs.5 per device receiving a token or receipt for collection later.
Basic mobile phones without cameras are still permitted inside the premises.
Taking photos of deities, filming rituals, recording videos, making reels, and snapping selfies are strictly barred.
