Former Cricketer Sourav Ganguly is brand ambassador of West Bengal
In a major announcement, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the midst of the seventh edition of the Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS) declared former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly as the brand ambassador for the state.
This comes following Ganguly’s earlier appointment as the brand ambassador for Tripura before his ties worsened with the BJP-led government.
While addressing at the Summit, Banerjee handed Ganguly a handwritten letter offering him the role.
Mamata attributed Sourav Ganguly as well-loved and can positively engage with the younger generation.
She would like to bring him on board as the Brand Ambassador of Bengal. .
Ganguly, amidst applause from the audience, did not refuse the offer, and Banerjee expressed her happiness, urging him not to decline.
Ganguly in response said that he feels honoured to be among successful individuals who impact young lives. Growing up here, guided by esteemed people, makes this day special. Thanks to the Chief Minister and the government for prioritizing this summit. Didi keeps him updated on figures like Mukeshji, Sanjeevji, Mr. Puri, and Mr. Premji, eager to contribute to our city’s development. Seeing the city grow is fulfilling, and it’s great that influential figures are keen on investing in its prosperity.
Mamata further went on to add that Ganguly is a very popular figure and he can work for the young generation in a very good manner.
Ganguly’s announcement as the brand ambassador of West Bengal announcement holds significance for two main reasons. At first, Ganguly served as the brand ambassador for Tripura, a Bengali-majority state under BJP rule. Tensions later emerged between him and the saffron regime. Secondly, Bengal already had a brand ambassador in the form of Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, appointed by Mamata in 2012. It remains unclear whether Khan will continue in this role following Ganguly’s appointment.
Ganguly’s presence at the summit, coupled with his new appointment, suggests a potential shift in his political affiliations, especially considering his previous association with the BJP.
Ganguly, once seen as a potential chief ministerial candidate for the BJP in Bengal, experienced a shift in his political journey. He faced removal from the post of BCCI president and encountered restrictions in running for the position of ICC chairman.
