A decade ago popular TV actress Roopa Ganguly who essayed the role as Draupadi in BR Chopra’s directorial “Mahabharata,” experienced a horrific incident, a scene that brought back the disrobing scene. unidentified men beat her on the street, causing her to suffer two brain hemorrhages.
The incident occurred near Diamond Harbour in South 24 Parganas, West Bengal. Ganguly, a prominent BJP leader at the time, was brutally attacked by a mob of about 17–18 assailants. She was pulled from her vehicle, beaten severely, resulting in two brain hemorrhages. as a result of the attack.
Later, in 2020, amidst the national lockdown re-telecast of Mahabharat, Ganguly revealed that the mob assault on the street brought back the visceral trauma and helplessness of filming the infamous Vastra-Haran (disrobing) scene. She compared the physical degradation, mob violence, and attempts to tear her clothes during the attack to her horrific reel-life ordeal.
Following the May 22, 2016 attack, Ganguly was rushed to a local district hospital and later received treatment at the AMRI Hospital in Kolkata for blood clots and a brain hematoma. Ganguly and her party blamed the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) for the attack, stating it was a politically motivated and well-planned assault.
