There has been a rise in a series of high-profile financial scams. The recent case traces to the Civic Body(BMC) Assistant Commissioner Mahesh Patil for defrauding veteran actor Jaaved Jaaferi’s wife Habiba Jaaferi of a whopping Rs. 16.24 crores in a fake Bandra Real Estate Investment Scheme.Patil has since been suspended on June 5, 2026. The Mumbai Crime Branch has launched a manhunt for the absconding Patil.
Fraudsters used forged documents and devices mimicking official government equipment to set up fake property registrations at the Jaaferi residence.
After an FIR at the Khar Police Station, the investigation was handed over to the Crime Branch’s Property Cell, which arrested primary accused Nishit Patel.
Authorities have intensified raids across multiple locations to apprehend Patil and other accomplices.
