Andy Burnham officially became the MP for Makerfield and is the heavy front-runner to replace Sir Keir Starmer as UK Prime Minister, following Starmer’s resignation on June 22. Burnham is positioned to formally take power as early as July, once the Labour leadership nomination process opens.
Sir Keir Starmer announced his resignation outside Downing Street following mounting internal party pressure and poor by-election polling.
The former Mayor of Greater Manchester, widely dubbed the “King of the North”, secured a landslide win in the Makerfield by-election and was sworn into the House of Commons.
Nominations for the new Labour leader are scheduled to open on July 9. Although other MPs Al Carns and Darren Jones have considered throwing their hats in the ring to force a contest, Burnham remains the undisputed favorite.
