Despite being mired in controversy and talk of the town ever since the release of trailer, The Kerala Story hit the theatres in Tamil Nadu on 5 May and received rare reviews both from critics as well as the cinegoers.

Reportedly, Theatre owners have stalled further screening of the controversy ridden film
citing law and order issues from Sunday 7 May and also over poor attendance at the cinema halls.

Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) in Tamil Nadu on 6 May staged a protest against the release of the film in Chennai. Following the protest inside a theatre against the screening of The Kerala Story, NTK cadres were detained by the police.

They were spotted armed with NTK flags and raising slogans for a ban the movie. Reports also comes to light that the party leader Seeman also made an appeal to the theatre owners to refrain from screening the film and urged people not to watch the movie.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that several politicians, including the Chief Minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan, made a statement that the film was aimed at spreading hate and tarnishing the image of the southern state and the whole of India.

Several outfits have also called for a ban on the film. Not just that, even a plea was also moved in the Supreme Court seeking a stay on the film’s release. However, the apex court turned down the plea stating that necessary modifications have already been made in the film by the Censor Board.

The Kerala Story centres around true events of numerous women in the state of Kerala tricked to join the ISIS in Iraq and Syria through love jihad. The makers have clarified that the film is not aimed at showing any particular religion in a bad light, but instead, it just aims to show the disturbing truth of the ISIS and the women who fall prey to it. Even Adah Sharma has slammed those terming the film The Kerala Story a propaganda film.
