Sudha Chandran, actress and dancer needs no introduction. She is an inspiration to many.
Sudha Chandran has lived life on her own terms. At the age of 57, her go-getter zeal towards life is impeccable. She was seen in Naagin 6 recently. Here’s a peek into her life’s struggles, how she turned them around with positivity and now thriving successfully.
At the age of 17, Sudha a Bharatnatyam dancer, met with an accident and her 1 leg had to amputated. She regained mobility with the help of a prosthetic Jaipur foot. With an artificial leg, Sudha resumed her dancing and went on to perform in several countries.
She bounced back in life owing to her parents. Interacting with the media recently, Sudha explained on not having the will to live following the accident. She really had no choice, for her there were only two paths. Either start walking or would have destroyed her life. Infact, she never wanted to live following the accident.
But thinking of her parents she bounced back. Somehow we tend to forget the role of our parents in our life. Probably, her parents were the only reason why she decided to keep going in life. Otherwise, she was left with no other reason.
When people advised her to quit acting and leave the industry
There was a time, when Sudha Chandran’s films flopped. She said, “Initially, she did not have to struggle to find work in the industry because her first film Mayuri was based on her own life. The real struggle started after that when many of her films did not work. People would walk up up to her and say that she is not cut for the industry. Just because one film based on your life worked doesn’t mean you are made for the industry. They would advise her to leave the film industry.
Sudha Chandran has been married to assistant director Ravi Dang since 1994. It was love at first sight for them. However, Sudha’s parents were against the match as she belonged to a Tamil family and he was a Punjabi. When despite several attempts the parents didn’t agree, the couple tied the knot at a temple in Chembur.
It’s been 29 years of marital life and the couple decided on not having kids. They didn’t even adopt a kid as they didn’t believe in ideology.
She had no work for 7 years
Talking about the phase, Despite winning a national award for Nache Mayuri, she had to sit home for 7 years unemployed. Today, people say that they are not able to survive 6 months in the pandemic but she survived for 6 years without any work. She waited because she she believed If she has set her foot to the industry there must be a reason. She trusted herself, the industry and the God above all. She was a post graduate with Economics, she could have got any other lucrative job, but she still waited for the magic to happen.”
The turning point in her life
Adding how life changed for her, the actress said, “The magic happened with Balaji Telefilms Kahin Kisi Roz’s Ramola Sikand. That was the turning point and the same people who once asked me to quit the industry came and awarded me the best negative actress award. And she considers it as the achievement of her life.” Her role as business tyrant Ramola Sikand got her massive fan recognition and is still remembered for her part.
On negative roles on TV playing an important part in her life
In the interaction, Sudha shared, she feels that she wouldn’t have survived in the industry for over 25 years now if she had not taken up the wonderful negative characters that came my way. When people tell her ‘arre what you still doing TV’? She tells them this television industry has made so many people’s lives and has given them fame, money and stability. When one production house stops working, 100 technicians have to sit home. She always pray television keeps working and people keep watching TV shows.
