Singer Daler Mehndi was cautioned by Dara Singh to desist from returning to India after ’84 riots’
In the wake of 84 riots, actor filmmaker Dara Singh had cautioned Singer Daler Mehndi to desist from coming back to India.
Daler Mehndi opened up on living in the US, and how Dara Singh tried to dissuade him from returning to India.
Daler had a work visa in America, and was a month away from getting his Green Card, when he booked himself a one-way ticket to India to pursue his passion.of becoming a singer in his home country.
Daler was born in August 1967 in Patna. He started singing at the age of 5. It is said that he even left his home to learn singing. In the initial days, he used to sing songs for 1 rupee.
When he was about to come to India from America to pursue a career in singing, he was forbidden by Dara Singh from coming here because of the Sikh riots.
Mehndi wanted to make his own path
Mehndi lived with his brothers in America on a work visa. Their plan was that after some time they would buy a liquor shop or a petrol pump.
llantop In a conversation with Mehndi said, “There was the same work there, but I felt that my path was different, I wanted to become something, wanted to be famous all over the world.”
Mehndi had booked the return ticket a month before getting the green card.
Dara had refused to come to India
The singer revealed that once he was performing at an event. Stars like Dara and Kabir Bedi were present there.
He said, “After the show ended, everyone was very happy, but Dara came to meet them. He told them about his plan to go back to India.”
In those days the Sikh riots of 1984 were in the news. In such a situation, Dara advised him not to return to India.
Dara advised to make a career in America
Dara told Mehndi, “If you want to make a career for yourself, you can make it there also. There is no reason to go to India.”
Mehndi said, “Many people started saying the same thing. In those days there were riots of 1984 and this is about ’86. I was told what did India give, there is no way, there is no place, all the enemies. We are there.”
Mehndi came back before getting green card and told one of his friends who made fun of him that he should return to India. There Bappi Lahiri, RD Burman were waiting for him.
Without Daler there is no one to sing. Everyone started laughing at him. After 2 months, he quietly booked his return ticket. After a month, he was to get the green card and he felt that he will be stuck there and will not be able to do what he wanted to do.
