Veteran filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt shared his clamorous
three-year romance with B’town’s glitzy actress Parveen Babi in 70’s and 80’s.
Parveen, who precipitously
passed away in 2005 at just 50, was at first cast in Mahesh Bhatt’s film “Ab Meri Baari”.
However, following her mental health crisis, Mahesh had to replace her with Rekha. Notwithstanding, the star power, the project hit a roadblock due to financial issues and never saw the light of day.
In a forthright conversation with a news channel, Mahesh Bhatt recounted a difficult chapter in his life with the late Parveen Babi. The filmmaker dropped that though he was in a bond with Parveen, he began working on a film titled Ab Meri Baari to spend more time together.
The movie was supposed to feature Dev Anand, Rishi Kapoor, Tina Ambani and also Praveen Babi. Amidst the shoot of the film, she had a mental (health) episode, fell sick and the film had to be discontinued.
Later they opted for Rekha and reshot it but due to lack of finance, it couldn’t be completed.
Coming to their romance, well, it blossomed in 1977 following split from Kabir Bedi
traumatized by the split, Parveen found solace in Bhatt, and the two quickly fell in love. Bhatt even left his wife, Lorraine Bright (known as Kiran Bhatt), and their daughter Pooja Bhatt, to be with the glamourous actress. However, their passionate bond was soon tested and eventually unraveled due to Parveen’s battle with mental health.
Parveen Babi, actress of the 1970s and 1980s, battled paranoid schizophrenia, which led to intense delusions and paranoia. She believed she was being targeted by powerful figures, including politicians and intelligence agencies, causing her to withdraw from public life.
Regardless her stardom, Parveen spent her final years in isolation, battling with her mental health.
