On 10 October, Bollywood’s stunning Diva turned 70. Super icon of Hindi cinema, Rekha, has, in the last decades, befriended many stars in her life and career. Of course, out of all of them, the most exceptional remains the bond that she has with SRK.
In 2017, when Rekha was requested to hand over the Yash Chopra Memorial Award to SRK at an event, along with Shatrughan Sinha and Padmini Kolhapure, she could not let that moment go without praising SRK.
She recites a poem by Gulzar called “Rooh Dekhi Hai Kabhi,,”, in which he inquires about the nature of the soul. She continues “Have you ever seen a soul? Felt it?A body burns a hundred times but still turns to ash. But a soul, when it burns, turns into a diamond”.
This metaphor so well portrayed her feelings towards Shah Rukh Khan. Rekha appreciated the actor just not for his talent but also for his kindness. She concluded by saying, “That person to SRK, I don’t know how many times that person has killed his soul since his childhood. Which is why he has been shining like a diamond. I pray to God, that the way he has made us smile, he is a beautiful human being. Talent flows in his veins. But more than that, he has love to offer, which all of us have seen”.
He has the gift of bringing people happiness,” and my hopes would just be that he gets as much love back as he gives.
Rekha narrated quite a memorable incident about how deep their connection was. One day, while flying, she was completely sleep-deprived and was on the verge of sleeping. SRK pushed her gently aside and asked her to roll down the window to view the serene orange sunset outdoors. She missed the sunset, but then she got locked into the gaze of Shah Rukh, that moment, in a small flash, she was convinced that he was her kindred spirit. Rekha’s beaming words and conversational experiences definitely reflect the deep respect and affection which she holds for Shah Rukh Khan.
