Infosys Narayan Murthy’s 70-hour work and L&T MD Subrahmanyan-90 hour work causes concern
On the heels of Infosys Narayan Murthy’s 70-hour work week comment, which has paved the debate on work-life balance over the recent past, it is now the turn of Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Chairman & Managing Director SN Subrahmanyan to enter the discussion and debate with an even higher expectation and desire to overwork employees.
At an in-house L&T event recently, just when answering a question on working on Saturdays, the head of one of the largest conglomerates in India, L&T, he regrets not being able to make his employees work on Sunday as well.
Further adding to the library of the 70-hour theory of Infosys Chief Narayan Murthy, Subrahmanyan added his own 90-hour theory, wherein he would want Indians to work for 90 hours a week, which would amount to 15 hours a day in a 6 week, working.
In the past few days, this opinion of his has generated a lot of traction.
Work 90 hours a week to make India Great is a ‘tool of regimentation’ that if succeeds, can rob the young if independent thinking making them vulnerable even to worse forms of regimentation. A nation is a collection of people and the people needn’t, and indeed shouldn’t, all march together. India’s workforce ùIndia’s workforce should tell business bosses who say this stuff that if your idea of a great country is one where everyone is working long hours seven days a week, thinking of nation building, then, you are in the wrong country.
