Mamata Banerjee announces to work ro strenghten ‘India bloc

Following Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) securing a majority in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections putting an end to the 15 years of Trinamool Congress (TMC) rule Mamata Banerjee announced she will work to “strengthen” the INDIA bloc from the outside. Banerjee called ppherself as a “free bird” without the responsibility of being Chief Minister, stating she would focus on national politics. Regardless the electoral setback, Banerjee initially refused to resign, alleging a “conspiracy” rather than a public mandate.

She vowed to continue fighting against the BJP-led NDA government, which she labeled “unstable and weak,” and confirmed her commitment to the opposition alliance.

She reported receiving calls of support from several INDIA bloc leaders, including Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, after the results.

For the first time, Mamata Banerjee has spoken about strengthening the Opposition alliance; the statement is significant as it comes after her defeat in the West Bengal results..
