The Venetian Macao was swept by a wave of pure nostalgia on
13 June 2009. The glitz of the IIFA Awards faded into the background as the entire Indian film industry stood up to salute a phenomenon. In a moment of cinematic poetry, Rajesh Khanna stepped onto the stage to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Making the night unforgettable, the trophy was presented by none other than the Legend Amitabh Bachchan his unforgettable co-star from the masterpiece “Anand”
Bachchan’s emotional tribute
Before handing over the trophy, an emotional Amitabh Bachchan paid a grand, reverent tribute to his former co-star. Addressing the roaring crowd, Bachchan acknowledged the unmatched era of Khanna’s peak. He stated,
“No actor before or after him has witnessed the kind of superstardom Rajesh Khanna did. No actor has ever entertained Hindi cinema quite as he has.
The words carried the heavy weight of their shared history, instantly transporting the audience back to the 1970s golden era of cinema.
Decades after they shared the silver screen, the duo reunited under the spotlight. Beaming with a smile of pure pride and joy, Khanna looked out at a sea of peers, juniors, and fans giving him a thunderous, emotional standing ovation. The rapturous applause seemed to echo the cheers of the millions who had once swooned over his iconic crinkled smile and tilted head.
“A Long Journey, I Must Say”
As the stadium fell quiet, the legendary actor looked over at Bachchan and affectionately called him by his classic screen nickname, “Babu Moshay.” Turning back to the audience, his voice carried the emotional weight of a lifetime, delivering a poignant reminder of what it takes to build an immortal legacy:
“It took me 40 long years and 180 films to finally hold this IIFA Lifetime Achievement Award.
A long journey, I must say, ladies and gentlemen. Whatever I am today, it is because of your love. You made me from an actor to a star, and from a star to a superstar.
Khanna then capped off the unforgettable night by reciting his iconic, bittersweet philosophy:
“Izzatein, shohratein, ulfatein, chahatein, sab kuch is duniya mein rehta nahi. Aaj main hoon jahan, kal koi aur tha. Yeh bhi ek daur hai, woh bhi ek daur tha.” (Respect, fame, love, and desires—nothing stays in this world forever. Where I am today, someone else was yesterday. This is an era, and that was an era too.)
