In a new development the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly passed an amendment bill plugging the “orchestra loophole”. Establishments will now require permits under the Maharashtra Prohibition of Obscene Dance Act rather than weaker police licenses, and violators will face much stricter penalties to prevent obscene performances under the guise of live music.
Many bars bypassed the 2016 dance bar laws by using lenient orchestra/live music licenses issued under Section 33 of the Maharashtra Police Act. This new amendment reclassifies live music venues into the same strict regulatory category as traditional dance bars.
The legislation is intended to curb illegal/obscene bar activities while protecting the dignity and safety of women working in hotels and bars.
The bill mandates harsher punishments for establishments that host illegal, unregulated dance performances, reflecting the government’s push for compliance.
