The year 1980:
It was the muhurat of of
Showman Subhash Ghai’s directorial “Karz” released in 1980. The showman was orchestrating Rishi Kapoor and Simi Garewal into a reincarnation thriller that turned Hindi cinema into a rock opera. This wasn’t just another masala flick. Ghai lifted the idea from

“The Reincarnation of Peter Proud” and spun it into a desi cocktail, part revenge drama, part musical extravaganza, part gothic fantasy. Who else could dare to choreograph murder, betrayal, and rebirth to the beat of a disco ball?

Rishi, in his satin shirts and guitar slung like a badge of destiny, wasn’t just acting, he was seducing an entire generation into believing that justice could be stylish, that karma could groove to “Om Shanti Om.” And Simi, with her icy elegance and femme fatale aura, gave Bollywood one of its most deliciously sinister women, a shade so rare that even today it makes the screen shiver. Together, under Ghai’s baton, they turned melodrama into mythology.

“Karz” emerged as template, moodboard, and myth, inspiring everything from Farah Khan’s reincarnation tribute in “Om Shanti Om” to the entire disco wave that followed.

Meanwhile Subhash Ghai didn’t just direct a film, but carved out a cinematic rhythm that Bollywood still dances to, knowingly or not.
