Somaiya Vidyavihar University Hosts Successful ‘Somaiya Youth Parliament’
Addressing the Citizenship Amendment Act
Somaiya Debating Society on February 2 2026 successfully staged the Somaiya Youth Parliament’ (SYP)
at Somaiya Vidyavihar University in Mumbai.
The epoch-making event
which generated an overwhelming response
was a witness to over
150 overall delegate registrations from students motivated to engage in structured
discourse and policy-driven discussions.
The SYP served as a
platform designed to
foster critical thinking, moral reasoning, and civic consciousness by engaging students with contemporary national issues. Rooted in the values of equality, rationality, and respect for diverse perspectives, the forum encouraged participants to move beyond rhetoric and engage with ideas in an informed, balanced, and solution-oriented manner.
The youth parliament featured rigorous debates across two prominent committees simulating high-level Indian governance bodies:
All India Political Party Meet (AIPPM): Serving as a vital forum for dialogue among India’s diverse political stakeholders, this committee focused on consensus-building on issues of national importance. The delegates were tasked with the critical agenda of “Reviewing the Implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019”. Participants critically examined the administrative, constitutional, and socio-political dimensions of the CAA, highlighting implementation challenges and the broader implications for governance.
Inter-State Council (ISC): Functioning as a constitutional forum established to strengthen cooperative federalism, the ISC facilitated dialogue amid the Union and State governments. The committee’s agenda centered on “Centre-State Coordination and Federal Challenges in the Implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019”. Participants deliberated on the practical and constitutional challenges of the act, evaluating administrative feasibility, legal safeguards, and the responsibilities of state governments.
Through rigorous debate and collaborative problem-solving, the Somaiya Youth Parliament successfully fostered intellectual independence and equipped young leaders with the confidence to uphold democratic principles and contribute meaningfully to society.
