End of an era: K.BhagyarajTollywood’s cinema’s Screenplay King breathes his last at 73

Legendary Tamil filmmaker and actor K. Bhagyaraj, widely revered as the “Screenplay King” of Indian cinema, passed away in Chennai at the age of 73 following a sudden cardiac arrest. His demise marks the end of an era for nuanced, middle-class storytelling.

Bhagyaraj is remembered for his revolutionary contributions to Kollywood and beyond.
Spanning over five decades, he directed over 25 films and acted in around 75 movies. Acknowledged for blending sharp humor, social commentary, and emotional family drama.
He wrote and directed timeless films that are still studied today, such as “Andha 7 ” Mouna Geethangal MundhanaiÄ£ Mundhanai Mudichu55.

His rilliant storytelling extended beyond Tamil cinema and notably he directed the hit Hindi film
“Aakhree Raasta” featuring
Amitabh Bachchan.
His tragic passing came just 17 days following the death of his mentor, legendary director Bharathiraja.

He is survived by his wife, actor Poornima Bhagyaraj, his son, actor Shanthanu Bhagyaraj, and his daughter, Saranya Bhagyaraj.
