Mona Singh resumes her wellness journey with yoga; loses 10 kg

Remember Mona Singh, the ‘Jassi Jaise Koi Nahin’ fame. Somehow, she appears to be a maverick when it comes to delineating the experiences of artistes who don’t fit the stereotypical ‘size-zero’ mould.

She has always got work and her figure has never restricted her. She made her debut with the offbeat and immensely successful telly drama,
and believed in being size zero and has always been healthy, at times even a little plump. She has been fuller, but always wanted a fitter body to be more agile.

However, it was a professional requirement that brought over Mona’s recent physical transformation. Asked to shed seven kilos for a project, she needed to return to her fitness regimen that had been suspended after a shoulder injury. She approached a yoga instructor for her shoulder injury because a few friends said she would benefit from mobility exercises. The intention to adopt yoga wasn’t to lose weight but to heal herself so that she could begin training again. But, her body reacted to it beautifully. She began shedding kilos because her trainer’s style of yoga is intense. He teaches Ashtanga yoga, among the toughest forms of the discipline.

One must hold postures for about four minutes, and breathing becomes laboured. Her body hadn’t experienced something like that before, and she loved it. When she started to meditate, she enjoyed the rhythm of yoga and suddenly she was 10 kilos lighter,”giving due credit to her her trainer for also doubling as a nutritionist and helped her “include a lot of ghee” in her diet and taught her to “be mindful of her choice of food.

Knowing that she had “tried everything” in the book to become fitter, Mona, once a gym goer, admits that the “blaring music” at such facilities was dissuading. She wanted quiet and peace, and enjoy slow mornings and eventually Yoga offered that.

She is quick enough to add, though, several factors helped her accomplish this feat at the age of 42 she wasn’t mindful of what shd ate but, just wanted to be thinner, but never worked towards it. So, it also depends on your will. Today, her look has boosted her confidence and she enjoys the kind of clothes she wears for promotions, because this is something she hasn’t experienced in several years. But, the concept of being size zero is overrated. The way she looked has never worn her.. down, mentally. But, she used to tell herself wish could wear something else as she was fed up of seeing herself in salwar suits and ‘comfy clothes’ at all times. If you notice, that’s what she has worn in most of the shows has done. Now, in her 40s, she is reinventing herself.

Does she manage to adhere to her diet, she responds with a laugh, that she is very disciplined. Only after a lot of burns, butchery, and sweat has she been able to achieve this. She won’t take it for granted. Recently, she went on a vacation with her husband, and was very careful [with her food choices]. But,doesn’t starve.

To the women who believe achieving such a feat in their 40s is cumbersome, Singh offers words of encouragement. “Recently, his mother underwent surgery, and he noticed that only women were there at the hospital. I asked the surgeon what was going on, and he said, ‘Mona, women don’t look after themselves.’ Women should start taking care of their health. Your body changes even [as early as] in your 30s. The worst thing that we experience is muscle loss because we don’t eat clean and exercise. Our bone density goes for a toss. It is important that we put ourselves first.”

She has been told to include ghee, coconut water, chaas, and dahi in her diet. Today, she is predominantly vegetarian. And, if I must, I will be a pescatarian. A lot of her protein comes from vegetables, pulses, and curd. She doesn’t have protein powders or supplements. Also follow a satvik diet, and eat according to seasons. She doesn’t eat [fruits and vegetables] that are available throughout the year because have been told that they are not healthy. So, in the winter, eat different kinds of saags. In the summer, will have foods [that are cooling for the body] and substitute wheat with ragi, and may have white or brown rice. Because follow intermittent fasting, and first meal is lunch, and usually comprises one roti, dahi, ghee, dal, and lots of salads. In the evening, indulge in nuts and black coffee, or may have a fruit. Have dinner early, at about 7.30 pm. When on shoot carry a bowl of clear vegetable soup, mix with rice and ghee. Sometimes, carry cottage cheese – one that is high in protein content – or may take a piece of salmon with her. As for supplements, take a pill of ashwagandha and also magnesium and Omega 3 and 6. And, use krill oil.
