The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) distanced itself from Maharashtra MLA Sana Malik’s controversial remarks regarding triple talaq and polygamy in the state assembly.Maharashtra NCP president Sunil Tatkare clarified that Malik’s statements reflected only her personal opinion and did not represent the party’s official stance.
Amidst a heated legislative assembly discussion on Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and triple talaq, Malik remarked on polygamy and suggested implementing Pakistani laws regarding the practice in India.
Tatkare issued a statement on X (formerly Twitter) asserting that the NCP is committed to protecting women’s rights regardless of caste or religion.
He emphasized that the party supports the legal position on triple talaq and firmly opposes arbitrary matrimonial dissolutions.
While Tatkare acknowledged Malik’s constitutional right to express her views as an elected representative, he explicitly stated that the NCP does not endorse them. Malik later defended her position, stating she was misunderstood and was simply pointing out how polygamy is handled elsewhere.
