The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is launching a major crackdown onp sidewalk blockages. BMC Chief Ashwini Bhide recently led a three-hour field inspection across five key wards in South Mumbai to check walking conditions.During the visit, Bhide walked through busy areas including Nana Chowk, Grant Road, Nair Hospital, Marine Lines, and Crawford Market. Following the inspection, she ordered immediate, strict action to clear public walkways and improve safety for walkers.
The civic chief directed local ward officers to remove all illegal stalls and unauthorized extensions.
The BMC will now run daily clearance drives. High-traffic zones near railway stations, schools, and hospitals will get top priority.
The crackdown targets both illegal encroachers and non-compliant businesses. Bhide ordered a full audit of licensed hawkers. Teams will verify that legal vendors stay strictly within their permitted boundaries. Those blocking paths will face penalties or lose their licenses.Focus on Cleanliness and SafetyThe initiative also addresses public littering and illegal parking on sidewalks. The BMC plans to install CCTV cameras and warning signs at major garbage dumping spots. Civic officials urged residents to stop parking vehicles on footpaths to keep walking paths safe and clear.
