DCP Crime Datta Nalawade: Ambergris (whale vomit) worth Rs 5.91 crores seized – 2 arrested
Mumbai Police DCP Crime Datta Nalawade announced that Ambergris (whale vomit) worth Rs 5.91 crores seized two people have been arrested. They were arrested when trying to trade the whale vomit near Bhandup-Kanjurmarg Road, Bhandup . Case has been registered CR/28/21 under various sections of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 and further investigations are on.Acting on a tip-off the operation was lead by Inspector Manish Shridhankar on Unit-7 Crime Branch Mumbai
Ambergris (whale vomit) has been adopted for several uses, including being used as incense, as an ingredient in cigars to improve their odor, in medicine to help with colds, headaches, and other medical conditions, to protect individuals from a plague (the scent of whale vomit was believed to prevent the plague by eliminating the plagues odor which was believed to be the way the plague transferred from person to person) and as an aphrodisiac among other purposes
whale vomit has also been used as an ingredient in certain makeup cosmetics. Ambergris is a rare material that is considered highly desirable by companies related to the cosmetics and perfume industry.
It has been banned in India, therefore trading in Whale vomit is an offence
