Amul’s foray into Karnataka
Sparks controversy

Amul’s foray into the state of Karnataka has sparked controversy.
Recently there was an announcement that the dairy will supply fresh milk and other dairy products in Bengaluru.

No sooner the announcement was made, locals and opposition leaders strongly reacted to it. Hashtags
‘Save Nandini’ ‘Go back Amul’ started trending on Twitter.

Actually the controversy erupted after Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) which sells dairy products under the name Amul announced its foray in the south Indian state.

The reason for the backlash was the state has its local brand ‘Nandini’ run by Karnataka Milk Federation which is the second-largest milk producer in the country.

Infact, the Opposition leaders and locals were gripped in tension that Amul’s entry to the state will hurt the dairy farmers in Karnataka and it would also result in joblessness in the state.

Meanwhile, the MD.of GCMMF, Jayen Mehta was quoted in a section of the media that he was aware of the row over brand’s entry to Karnataka adding that Amul is currently looking at e-commerce or quick commerce channels and not looking at general trade. The brand’s entry in modern trade in Bengaluru will only happen six months later.
